Update on negotiations with CUPW
January 17, 2025, 03:27 pm
Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) participated in negotiations this week. However, despite best efforts and some real progress in key areas, the talks have broken off without new negotiated agreements.
CUPW’s position that any new agreements should be subject to later invalidation, pending the union’s ongoing constitutional complaint, makes it impossible to have meaningful negotiations until the complaint is settled with the Canada Industrial Relations Board.
The talks were mediated by William Kaplan and held in parallel with the work of the Industrial Inquiry Commission (IIC), which is examining the current collective bargaining dispute as well as Canada Post’s broader financial situation and competitiveness.
Committed to negotiated agreements
As we shared a few days ago, we entered this week’s discussions fully committed to reaching negotiated agreements with CUPW to help us better serve the changing needs of Canadians while maintaining good jobs to those who provide the service.
While service has been restored across the postal system, our customers want assurance that we will be able to operate without further disruptions before they trust us with some or all of their shipments. The only way to provide that assurance is through negotiated agreements.
We will now turn our focus to the upcoming hearings with the IIC and provide an update on that process next week.
