CUPW negotiations: Canada Post receives strike notices
November 12, 2024, 08:08 am 102 comments
Today, Canada Post received strike notices from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), for both Urban and RSMC (Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers) bargaining units. The notices indicate that CUPW intends to begin strike activity as of Friday, November 15 at 12:01 a.m. ET, unless the parties reach agreements before then.
Our operations continue as normal at this time.
We’ll share more detailed information with you shortly. Please stay tuned.
10 days medical leave and 13 personal days. 23 dats of paid leave. Who gets that? NO ONE! If this is an example of CUPW’s demands I wouldn’t cave to them either. Bring on binding arbitration!
CUPW is not demanding 23 days of paid leave. There are currently 7 personal days in the collective agreement, while 3 personal days and 10 medical leave days are required by the Canada Labour Code. CPC is “offering” to put those 13 days (again, required by law) in the collective agreement.
CUPW is not demanding an 10 days in addition to the 13 required by law, but 10 days in addition to the 7 already in the collective agreement, for a total of 17 personal days (for permanent employees only), which is only four more than the law requires. (Temporary/on-call employees would still have the same 13 days they have now under the law.)
If CUPW goes on strike, will employees still receive benefits for essential things like medication or hospitalization?
Canada Post has terminated the collective agreement as of 8:00 Friday (Nov 15), and with it all benefits, including prescription drugs and other health benefits.
Cupw playing chicken with cpc. Cupw better not weasel out of the strike on Friday.
I don’t ever recall an insolvent company going on Strike. Should be interesting…..
Well the circus opens Friday with the clowns of cupw that can’t even agree on a contract the last 4 times …what a great membership fee of 92.00 a month .. why waste a year next time send it straight to arbitration..free food and lodging I guess
Brilliant.. incompetency at its finest The union needed to push back with more raise for the agreement to push certain issues to go to arbitration.. because that’s where we’re going anyway now we’ll get less and not for yrs after the fact Great job once again cupw!!
Another brilliant failure by CUPW. Will they give everyone a refund on the $1200 per year we each pay for nothing. Thanks in advance CUPW!
This is nothing new for CUPW. Two contracts settled in 30 years. Every other negotiation has ended in strike/ lock-out. Great work CUPW!
Union can never come to an agreement with CPC, always willing to spend huge sums of money just to have someone outside the company decide for them.
Last time we went to arbitration we ended up with a better deal.
Give them 2.5% first year, 1.5 % second year and only sign a two year deal subject to starting 7 day a week delivery. Full timers can have their Monday-Friday. Sign up the weekend staff. We move letters and parcels … Focus on that. No dice … lock out.
Cpc already filed lockout notice for Friday 8 am
not what that means.
There is no lockout notice, just a change of working conditions as the contract will no longer apply. No where does it say lockout
Don’t forget changing the name to North Korea post to reflect how the corporation runs things
There was an agreement between the parties not to issue notices under certain conditions. Given that the employer has not yet replied to CUPW’s latest offer, and the parties are still at the table with federal mediators, it’s very unclear what has prompted this.
As a CUPW member, I have not been able to get any answers from my union about that, and it looks very much like union leaders (who still get paid if we go on strike) have unilaterally violated that agreement without cause. If there is a good reason, they should be forthcoming with it.
What? This has been impending for months. It was bound to happen. To claim it is unclear what prompted this, you are and have clearly been out of touch. Various bulletins on CUPW.ca as well as here on infopost.
Curious to know what questions you are looking for? As a member, are you tired of losing every negotiation? Working on over a two year old’s wage scale? I know I am.
Hi:
No one in the union at any level gets paid when there is a work disruption.
Your statement is incorrect. Union Executives DO NOT get paid when on strike.
No because cupw “executives” spent all the union members money at hotels over past year getting absolutely nothing done. The. Another useless trip to Ottawa and NO CUPW does not communicate to members at all. No different than what they do for greivances, etc. theit only concern is FT employees and PT as casuals have had enough of them . Worst union ever
We are the union
All of us that pay dues
Good move. We need to end this waste of time. Now we have a deadline, if the company cares there will be an offer that can be examined and voted on. Which means there is no need yet to strike, as long as there is an offer. And if the vote is strike, then it can now happen asap….getting close to Black Friday and Cyber Monday
At KMPP, there are 14 supervisors/superintendents who are not engaged in any productive work. It raises the question of why the corporation is spending money on unproductive individuals instead of allocating funds to employees who are actively handling the mail.
CP is on a downward spiral, thanks to the management and the union
CPC entirely to blame for this mess with their insane rollbacks. And getting back to work legislation with Trudeau in the dumps may be impossible. Time to gut management completely — they are incompetent!
They both need each other to blame.
NO. CPC is fully and only to blame. We did everything asked during covid moving a million parcels a day risking our lives. Covid was the excuse used numerous times after the fact as to why we cant give you this or that. Plenty of money to be burned to buy and install telematics not for disciplining but now used for disciplining, throwing out everything not bolted to floor (even brand new stuff, ask the supers if they’re honest) for SSD to be rammed down our throats along with management bonuses and grants and monies to anyone that asks. Now it’s time to pay up. Nice try blaming labour. Try running a company properly!
Shouldn’t even bring up Covid. The way that entire clown show was dealt with by CPC is just another stone chipped off of their stable, proving their incompetence, as well as corruption.
Let’s be clear on one thing, CUPW is in it for themselves. They have lost touch with reality. We are no longer a letter mail delivery company and the only reason we are still in business is because of e-commerce, and even then our child company delivers parcels at a much lower cost per piece. The only way we can sustain our business is to increase productivity to a level that we can compete for the business. Lets see how long the government will support the losses we will incur over the next few years.
And you don’t think North Korea post only in it for themselves? Look around at this past year. An entire year of not coming to table or dismissing any negotiations knowing full well they were running the clock. Bullying and harassment of employees exploded with interviews and suspensions galore. Grievances have gone through the roof. And all for what? Only now with time having run out and needing to make seem as if doing something in the public eye, they strategically presented two virtual identical and offensive global offers all while crying poor and playing the victim as they wait out the eventual binding arbitration which is what they wanted all along essentially deferring everything likely another 2 yeats. Tells me they have lots of business and money yet to play with. Deals likely already made with some customers behind the scenes for when this comes out the other side. Just need to keep playing the sky is falling facade a little longer at our expense as usual until resumption of normal operations and bonuses flowing again (to management) patting each other on the back on how good they fooled us and Canadians again. Whether strike or lockout shut it all down hard, everything! East to west Then let’s see
Agree. Cupw continues to support paying Full timers when casuals and PT barely get 20 hours. A total waste of money. Most FT are accommodated, way beyond retirement and beyond lazy. Cupw also blatantly supports mgmt abuse of part timers and gets them to do full timers work so FT can slide on shift 1. Totally corrupt and disgusting. This union dues absolutely nothing but spend funds
what are they rolling back? Answer: You don’t have any idea, because there are no rollbacks , with the exception of the pension benefits change.
Exactly and people who are well beyond retirement should take the opportunity to retire by end of 2026. If you know math, Defined contribution works far better in most cases and you can take your money with you and invest it . Funny how cupw did not mind reducing hourly pay for anyone hired after 2013 so new hires in 2015 do exactly same work if not more and get paid less. Cupw has stated their priority if to benefit ft employees only yet they charge ot and casuals exorbitant dues. This union should be disbanded. They have not managed to get a deal for employees for over 10 years but somehow manage to spend union funds Lol
The hourly pay reduction for new hires as of (not after) 2013 was not negotiated, it was imposed by legislation under the Harper government.
I would agree that defined contribution may be advantageous to many entering a changing labour market that sees fewer people staying at the same company for decades, but those who have been paying into the current defined benefit plan should not suffer the effects of their pension pool being reduced as their plan is phased out.
To date, CPC has given no concrete assurances that their benefits will not be touched, even while it continues to enjoy a holiday from employer contributions.
There are significant rollbacks to the health plan, including requiring 1000 hours as a permanent employee before being eligible. which can be close to a year for many part-time employees.
Hours worked as on-call employees would not count towards this, which include a minimum of 480 probationary hours before even being allowed to apply for permanency. In reality, on-call workers will generally have worked over 2000 hours before having the seniority to achieve permanency.
If there is another offer by cpc…somewhat better then their last offer….it should be voted on by the membership…
Not going to happen with a bunch of Scrooges running the corporation to the ground.
when would cupw put this latest offer to a strike vote? are they hiding something?
What are you talking about? We held strike votes already. We don’t vote for strike after each offer…
Bye Bye our beloved Canada Post.. Absolutely gutted.. Thanks CUPW
LOL!
Great you should leave now. Support CUPW together.
YOU ARE GUTTED!!!!!
Thanks also to CPC execs who are not affected a bit with what’s gonna happen to CPC’s future because of their hefty accounts. They care less.
How much u wanna bet cupwoke stalls and doesn’t strike.
I agree 💯 % they won’t strike just trying to look good…no they’ll let CPC lock us out then blame it all on them! Lol…this is a cat and mouse game and both sides need to be ASHAMED
Yes and what union on strike lets employees cross picket line to process and deliver cheques. Insanity
Most unions make humanitarian accomodations
Cupw acknowledges Hindu heritage month but not remembrance day and never Christmas. Why?
Exactly. Excellent point. This union is nothing but political, their demands are nothing but political, and we are about to be used as their political pawns. Cupw is NOT democratic. If they were they would allow the membership to vote on the current offer, recommending we not accept it. This strike notice is nothing more than cupw trying to prove itself relevant to the labour movement. Cupw continued promotion of their political views will do nothing but offend and create division amongst the membership. Cupw…. Drop the politics and get back to business.
That’s Ok let’s get those as stat days. Together
Fake news from a fake postie
CUPW is the union for the underprivileged and marginalized. They want to keep us oppressed by CPC overlords, so we can rely on their help. CPC and CUPW are working together to pull the rug from underneath us when we get close achieving a better agreement.
CUPW just wants to make sure that enough money is allocated towards the education fund, so they can use the money for more so called all expenses paid trips for course training or annual retreats to places like Cuba and Niagara Falls (attended by all NEB and executive union members). Yeah free vacations.
I can not vote yes to any agreement until the company is detailed clear about how dynamic routing will impact the current full time Mon-Fri letter carrier. I mean crystal clear.
You don’t get to vote, the union will do what it takes to screw this up also
DR will fail, it’s not equipped with good people who has technical knowledge.
If a deal is not reached by Friday, I hope with all my heart, that it is an all out strike. Rotating strikes do absolutely nothing. This is the time, brothers and sisters, to stick together. CPC has tried and will keep trying to divide us. Let’s get a deal done. Stronger united.
Rotating strikes are illegal now in Canada
Does nothing. This will go to arbitration once again.. have fun with the same offer you received 2 weeks ago with less money and no raise until arbitration is complete — around 2 yrs+
Another brilliant failure by CUPW. Will they give everyone a refund on the $1200 per year we each pay for nothing. Thanks in advance CUPW!
How exactly is this all on cupw when cpc has not once done any sincere bargaining in earnest? They have been playing this go crying to the govt schtik since day one. There was never any intention or interest in properly compensating it’s workers, just big fat management bonuses for driving company down
Your cushy “management “ job will be one of the first to go. You offer
Nothing for the company. At least us low life letter carrriers
Do something somewhat tangible
I agree 💯 % they won’t strike just trying to look good…no they’ll let CPC lock us out then blame it all on them! Lol…this is a cat and mouse game and both sides need to be ASHAMED
Not true. They are actually quite effective. Think about it, plant gets sent out, those at the depots receive zero product, forcing the corp to negotiate, or lock out. Doesn’t take a Brainiac. CPC can cut, cut, cut for decades, while execs make over half a million+ per year. Members have the ability to at least attempt to fight back.
When was the last time you had a pay cut? How about never
It is cupw who has divided us. Ft are the top tier and PT and casuals second tier. Cupw has said that statement to every part timers. Disgusting
Can we ask for money allocated for Palestine as a demand? And a dues increase for social causes like rehoming those fleeing trump into Canada. I think members really want this.
Is this a joke?? Lol!! Donate your paycheck to your own personal causes and leave mine alone.
Wonder if cupw is bluffing and nothing happens come Friday lol
If not then we’ll working without a contract. Work to rule. Any vacation, time off, benefits, protections, etc are all at the mercy of the company
Cupw flexing they’re muscles. BOOM.
STRIKE!!!!!!!!! FIRE ALL CPC MANAGEMENT!!!
Thank you the one on the forum first!
Merry Christmas to me. Executive for cupw. I still get my pay and benefits not to mention one week all paid vacation in cancun no matter what. So happy strike
what are you talking about. None of that is true
Same thing with all CPC management and executives. For sure they don’t care a bit with all those big bonuses in their pockets. They can retire anytime they want.
Go get them hope we get better then second global offer 🙏
Keep dreaming. CUPW is always the same. They’re so unreasonable it’s impossible for them to come to an agreement without a strike or lock-out. I hope all the CUPW groupies who wanted to raise dues enjoy losing thousands in wages. I know I certainly won’t. Don’t worry thought, CUPW will call rotating strikes so they don’t have to pay strike-pay.
Give your head a shake. The fact you claim it is “unreasonable” to demand fair wages on a 2+year expired contract, and the end of SSD, among necessary changes in general is incredibly boggling.
But suppose it is inline when you’re just sitting on your couch..
Careful what you wish for. Not much pay on a picket line. Going to take along time to make that back if you ever do.
Exactly. Cupw will cave as they know there is no public support, read the comments, most people don’t want flyers or have a super mailbox and only check that once a week. Mail delivery once a week is enough and most get things done online now
Also it’s Less than minimum wage at $56/4 hrs picketing guess union leads spent all & at the 100 useless hotel meetings, trips to Cuba and Ottawa
The FT can picket, after all cupw only supports them on backs of part timers and casuals The rest have second jobs anyway so will pass . Well done cupw
CUPW making so many useless demands! When the only thing workers are really interested in is a pay raise, COLA, and to keep their pensions and benefits, all the rest scrap it!
100% agree
Agreed 👍
After arbitration, and losing my house, and probably my family, I’ll be more then happy in taking a 4 year contact, 1% for each year, and pay more then 100$ to our union :):):)
Agreed.
You already have cola clause, does it really need to be rolled into salary? Especially since it’s likely not a factor anymore with inflation under 2%
agree
Agreed
Agree
The list of demands by CUPW is a joke and unfortunately we will pay the price by losing at least a months pay and less when it goes to arbitration.
Exactly. And no raise until at least 90 days after arbitration is complete in 2027.. 2.5 years of nothing and then also nothing better than what the last offer was anyhow.. same old story!!
Of course, the same as always. Don’t forget the raise in the imposed settlement will be lower than Canada Post’s current offer. What a great victory for CUPW! They’ll probably go to Cuba to celebrate while we’re locked out.
The workers should take a cut so larger bonuses for management
Thank you CUPW it’s about time!
So what’s you’re saying is- you want Canada Poat to dictate your standard of living- dictate every aspect of how you do your job and dictate your quality of life before, during and after work and employment. 96% of us agree there should be a strike if needed. You’re in the 4%. Go work for someone else. You enjoy your job because of the sacrifices of retired Posties. Move along.
Anywhere you work, management will tell what to do. Welcome to the real world.
You’re kidding about the 96% right. How many members actually voted in the silly CUPW strike votes? I guarantee it was less than 10,000 out of 58,000 members. That’s why CUPW will never reveal that number. 90% of members are good workers who ignore the union as much as possible and want a negotiated settlement.
If those people didn’t vote, then they have no say now! They had plenty of time to tell CUPW no and didn’t. So now we’re where we’re at, because 95% of those that DID take the time to vote wanted it as so.
Snooze….lose…remember?
Well then they should go work somewhere else? Your admitted ignorance of/for being in a union is stunning.
“Ignoring strike votes” and “wanting a negotiated contract” don’t go hand in hand. Being in a union, as well as INVOLVED in the democratic process is how it works.
Thank God we have the national executive and don’t just have to take the massive spit in the face offer that came from CPC. That’s what it was, insulting. Cut, cuts and more cuts while the executives make hand over fist.
100% Support Union go strike as work hard carrier. All demands are for outside carrier.
