CUPW negotiations: Canada Post receives strike notices

Today, Canada Post received strike notices from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), for both Urban and RSMC (Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers) bargaining units. The notices indicate that CUPW intends to begin strike activity as of Friday, May 23 at 12:00 am local time, unless the parties reach agreements before then.
Our operations continue as usual at this time.
In the event CUPW initiates rotating strike activity, Canada Post intends to continue delivering for Canadians and Canadian businesses while working to reach agreements. The Corporation will work to minimize service disruptions, but customers may experience delays.
In the event of a national labour disruption, mail and parcels will not be delivered and no new items will be accepted until the disruption is over. All mail and parcels in our network will be secured and delivered as quickly as possible once operations resume.
Following either a rotating strike or a national labour disruption, processing and delivery may take some time to fully return to normal.
The potential for another strike comes at a critical moment for the postal system. Since 2018, the Corporation has recorded more than $3 billion in losses before tax, and it will post another significant loss for 2024. In early 2025, the Government of Canada announced repayable funding of up to $1.034 billion for Canada Post to prevent insolvency.
We’ll notify you if there is a labour disruption of any kind, and keep you updated as the situation develops.
Negotiations update
Canada Post remains committed to reaching collective agreements focused on protecting and enhancing the wages and benefits that are important to our people while reflecting the Corporations’ current realities.

As a non-member, I really feel for you all. What a messy situation with no winners that you unfortunately suffer from. May this end quickly and favourably so folks can return to work and not lose wages and benefits for weeks. Good luck to everyone (sorry to be so corny but I mean it!).
Corny and accurate
Anyone notice that the cut of the benefits already? Just went to submit some recents from this past month and unable to ….
why is it everytime we get a raise in the name of struggle and hardwork union keeps getting a raise where is this money going to we are at fleet and have absolute zero representation from the union. just messages on whats app this is what we are paying 100 dollars a month for. When we ask for help there none to get unions reps are involved deeply with management and in the end nothing gets resolved. This union is useless complete waste of money.
I do wonder where do the union dues go? $55,000 employees X $100 = $5.5M a month or $66M a year, That is $264M that members have paid CUPW for representation since 2021 and no deal, just $58 a day for strike pay and no benefits. Members lost 7% of their 2024 wages during the last strike. At what point does a strike become counter-productive?
hold the line strong ye right i am holding hahahahah
I am thinking that we should fire the people that keep going on strike. or just abolish the post Canada and create a other services that work for the gorvorment. and that has no Union that can be created. Honestly post Canada cost us 1 billions $ it is a falling post service.
I was hired and paid by Canada Post. Unfortunately when hired,I was part of the union,I had no choice. But I have a choice when it comes to my pay that keeps food on my table and not living on the mean streets . So Canada Post thank you ,Cupw bleep yourself.
agree COMPLETELY. i work FOR canada post, not this ridiculous archaic union.
I agree with Gary. We need to send our National CUPW a message that a strike is not the answer and not what us front line want or need. Time to negotiate sweeping changes in the way we do things – not little changes to the status quo. C’mon people… send a message. Stay home and don’t stand in at the picket line.
I won’t be bashing CUPW since I am paid by management to do that. All I have to say get rid of different classes of mail like admail or personalized mail and charge the same rate whether an individual or corporate.
Do you really believe anything productive will ever come from negotiations between CUPW and Canada Post?
It seems CUPW’s executive board is still stuck in the mindset of the 1970s and ’80s. Most of them are nearing retirement and appear disconnected from the concerns of younger employees. It’s hard to understand their thinking, especially in light of Canada Post’s current financial crisis. Yes, I agree that changes are necessary — the system as it stands is not sustainable.
There are employees working 5 or 6 hours a day who are still complaining, yet unwilling to accept change. If that’s the case, maybe it’s time they consider a different job. Personally, I value my job and plan to stay with the company. Many people seem to carry a sense of entitlement, as if the corporation owes them something just for showing up. They don’t realize how good they have it until they’re let go or are forced to seek employment elsewhere.
The local unions do great work. They’re connected with the employees and not involved with the national executive board, which often seems driven more by ego and power than by the reality of our situation. Is this the kind of leadership we can trust to negotiate on our behalf?
What exactly was achieved during the last strike in December? Can any of us truly afford another one?
I urge all of you: stand tall, but do not show up on the picket line just to collect the $60 a day. If you don’t believe in the cause, don’t support it with your presence. A strike without purpose only weakens our voice.
Let the CUPW executives know: We do not support this decision
Reality hurts CUPW.
In your closed environment within CPC you can argue for things and stomp your feet but when it went to Kaplan and the Public they see right through your nonsensical propaganda.
Turns out you can’t just throw spaghetti against a wall when your in the eyes of the public and a skilled arbitrator.
Postal banking? Janitors? They asked you how much money that would make. You said that isn’t your job and you didn’t have info
Management crunches the numbers. Yet – you say you don’t trust managements numbers. Oh the irony.
So here were are. 5 weeks without pay. Volumes lowest they’ve ever been. The threat of a strike hanging… and for what? Janitors? Nursing home work?
The folks at the top of this union need to step down immediately once this is all sorted. Hopefully Canada Post does the right thing and offers us a decent raise to wages and benefits while not touching our pension. Nothing else matters to the average worker. We come to work to make money to bring home to our families.
No other agenda. We just want to support our families.
Time to completely overhaul union dues too.
These should be a percentage. If a temp only works one shift – they shouldn’t be paying full dues folks.
If CUPW wants to negotiate multi tier pay for members based on years of service – then they should also be paying less dues.
Make it a percentage CUPW.
Then you might have some insensitive to NOT sign off on lower wages or lesser benefits for new hires.
CUPW needs to focus on wages, benefits, pension and job security – which – includes keeping the lights on!!!
Get rid of the bloated unnecessary collective agreement in exchange for higher wages, benefits, pension and job security.
Nobody cares about majority of clauses in the book. We already have right to refuse and strong safety rules in the labor code. Get rid of that.
Anything pertaining to LCRMS and work methods – delete that too.
Paid breaks? Paid Lunches? Keep that!
All the nonsense about how to staff? Overtime before bringing in temps??? Get rid of it. This isn’t 1955. It’s 2025.
Any appendix nonsense about pilot programs and what not. Get rid of it.
We need a LEAN CA
Good morning
I do hope today we see an offer with a good raise and significantly improved benefits (the same extended health plan as executives).
In exchange for deleting much of the collective agreement that is hindering Canada Post from being successful.
We need a lean CA that focuses on protections for employees rather than dictating every single part of how business is done.
When this is all said and done, make sure you thank CUPW when you dont have jobs to go back to…Or if by chance you do, you won’t be going back to what you’re used to,the GRAVY TRAIN is over folks!
Comments sure have changed this time around as that next to no one is supporting CUPW. This is what 5% of you wanted (strike action) and its just unfortunate that they were the ones who took the time to go and vote. Out of that 5% who showed up, 95% said yes to a strike. This what you get as a result.
That’s why CUPW will never release the actual number of members who voted to strike. I know I took the time to go and vote ‘No’, because I knew what would happen. It’s also the reason CUPW would never hold another vote now, they know they have very little support.
Also I’d like to know what representation there was for the 95% strike mandate… 15-20% of the membership actually voted.. ?? It’s our own fault — everyone always says ahh who cares or we’re too busy, tired, forgot. Etc. last contract we passed in 2022 as an extension had 9% turnout representing at 56% acceptance. Shame
i showed up and proudly voted no despite my regional rep suggesting i vote yes. shame indeed.
cpc giving out an offer tomorrow lets see what happens. who knows if it will be worth getting voted on or still strike as originally discussed by cpc. what a show. never worked for a union in my life 1st time and what an experience this is. what a puppet show.
How do you know an offer is coming tomorrow?
Ahhh it’s great to be back in the drama after being banned from CUPW unofficial
@Anonymous why were you banned from CUPW Unofficial? Oh you probably gave an opinion they didn’t like!!!
Sell go private and have Amazon delivery get the work done as they seem to manage hiring for cheap wages, long hours and making huge profits.
I was picketing last November. I got paid by Cupw via cheque after 2 weeks of freezing my ovaries off. The cheque.. wait for it…bounced . When I questioned the picket line leader ,he shrugged and said not my problem..this was not isolated, it happened to many people. Therefore you can rely on Cupw for bounced cheques ,calling strikes and not letting us vote on any contract. Keep up the good work
So typical, but that’s exactly how CUPW is, incompetent.
Why wouldn’t they let you vote on what is offered? Seems like that’s how it should work.
cupw needs to go to much corruption within union. cheif shop stweard dont do nothing and act like they are runing the show behind closed door. Union needs to goooo.
Since CUPW will not supply food or drinks at the picket line ,I guess our union dues don’t go as far as they
used to .Maybe our fearless president ,executives ,negotiators will help out . Now that’s hysterical. Lol lol lol
Don’t forget, rhe CUPW execs will still get paid while the members all lose thousands. They only care about their own egos and being ‘right’.
Some pins were passed out saying “hands off my post office”.
Hey CUPW – it isn’t your Post Office. It’s all of Canada’s.
Listen to Kaplan’s advice and smarten up!
That’s true. Let’s not forget CUPW is supposed to work for us. All members pay them more than $1200 a year. Too bad they do such a horrible job.
CUPW
Stop fighting for janitors. Clean up your own mess first.
Stop fighting against gig work. Reality check. Your members often work skip or door dash just to get by because you’ve failed to negotiate good wages and benefit increases for 20 years.
Stop fighting to take care of seniors. Take care of your members first.
Negotiate the trade of increased wages and benefits in exchange for a much slimmer collective agreements and full acknowledgement of Kaplan’s sound recommendations. 90% of that CA book can go in the recycle bin.
Both CPC management and CUPW should stop this bickering with each other. From day one, a much better solution would have been to unite in principle, and lobby the government to remove the requirement to make money . If the government wants Canada Post to subsidize businesses with much cheaper rates than can be found with private companies, then the government should be subsidizing Canada post for the resulting losses, if any. If the government wants to subsidize less funds, they can raise the prices accordingly. CPC management and CUPW leaders both need to be canned and a unified front should be formed.
Workers being held hostage by CUPW. I hope we will be able to vote on proposal Canada Post puts forward.
We do have that option. But I believe the government has to mandate a vote. Let’s hope they do, because we know our union will never compromise and reach an agreement.
I agree, and the government can force a vote. Let’s hope this nonsense is over soon.
we need union goneeeeee…
Canada post walked away from negotiations to get offers prepared. Are they done and when can we expect to see them and will CUPW let the members vote on offer? Have CUPW prepared any offers? We can’t do another strike.
Not only that, it’s incredibly difficult to negotiate with CUPW. They simply are not realistic or reasonable. This fact is outlined in Kaplan’s report.
Not allowed to vote on any contracts
Best option is to privatize Canada Post
Decertify CUPW first!
Best thing to do is sell Canada Post to a private firm and let them reform it.
CROSS THE PICKET LINE! THE END OF CUPW! TEAMSTERS FTW!
Very bad advice and luckily no ine will follow it. However, you are correct saying that CUPW has done a terrible job representing the workers who pay them. Remember we all pay more than $1200 a year for incompetent, unprofessional representation. There are good unions out there, CUPW is not one of them. According to the Canada Labour Code, if 30% of employees sign a petition to decertify, a vote must be held. It is possible to replace CUPW with a useful union.
Canada Post is in dire financial straights and has to restructure. I do believe that Canada Post is an essential service but recognize the need for an overhaul. CUPW wants to protect present and future workers but is not recognizing that there will be no jobs and workers to protect is there is no Canada Post. I’m sure there are solutions to this stalemate. Maybe a change is needed at the negotiating table… fresh blood on BOTH sides. It seems both teams have been at this for 2+ years and have been unable to make any headway…. so change things up. Fresh eyes, fresh ears and fresh attitudes might help.
If jobs do have to be lost and/or the workforce has to shrink let’s hope that attrition is the way to shrink it. Want to speed that along? Offer employees nearing retirement penalty free packages. Seriously….make me an offer.
It’s a sad state when you even mention CUPW. They are out of minds . Look around and see for yourselves. Need changes badly. CMB conversion will cost half of the 23000 letter carrier jobs Needed Part time jobs will increase so they say. Upper management jobs must be trimmed down to. Too many , also ,maybe part time supervisors too
you are clearly out to lunch. Management represents less than 10% of the corporation. CUPW has over 50 000 members, not sure where you read that there are only 23 000 mail carriers, there are plenty more than your estimate. working 3 hours, being paid a full day. Just wait until seperate sort delivery is implemented, we will see how many will be crying to keep their jobs when forced to work a full day.
I did ssd for 3 years before moving to an ancient depot and now I’m in cabs and on foot all day. My ssd days were significantly shorter and waay easier on the body. I’m not worried about it
You’re right, it’s human nature to think change is always bad. CUPW propoganda doesn’t help. Any intelligent member knows Canada Post must change and become more efficient. I’m not sure why it’s impossible for our union to compromise, but it only hurts workers and Canada Post.
There will be an offer before Friday, hopefully this offer will be the one.
We can only hope we are able to vote on it.
Ya but that 10% is eating up most of the labour/ salary income at cpc. Just like the 1% controls the majority of the worlds wealth
Seriously, the majority of the wasted money is not by management. It is by employees creating their own overtime opportunity by slowing down their work. I have been there, saw it for myself. Only a true cupw brainwashed employee could possibly blame anyone else but themselves for the financial situation of Canada post.
Exactly! They work 3 hours a day and get paid for way more than that. I work in a rural post office, and they also get a nice vehicle allowance. I love my job and I am afraid now that it may soon be gone. Where can you go that you get paid personal days, medical, and vacation. I’m not saying it’s an easy job just get paid for the hours work just like every other job out there.
If cupw really cared about members they wouldn’t be putting us back on the picket line to lose thousands of more money which we will never get back not mention the annual we will lose if out more than a couple of months all because union fighting for employees that don’t even work here yet
Not only that, but for a fight they can’t possibly win. Part-time weekend workers are coming no matter how much of a tantrum CUPW throws. Part-two of the strike will be just as useless as Part-One. The only thing it will accomplish is causing every member to again lose thousands of dollars and experience incredible stress for nothing.
What is wrong with you people? AGAIN, we’re going to let this union break us?.They don’t care they are going to end many of us. They don’t even hold any cards. All they’re doing is saving cpc millions. We will be out in the cold, please wake up. This is not the time to strike. Stand up and deny this strike. It’s ludicrous!!
100%
You’re exactly right. Of course CUPW will lose again, just like they always do. The only question, is how long will the government let it go for. Hopefully not long, for the sake of the majority who actually are good workers.
I agree. Get ready to lose thousands of dollars again for no reason. Other than building up the egos of our incredible CUPW execs.
Here is happiness. Some negotiators from CPC CUPW have gone to therapy due to stress, fear ,depression and uncertainty. Love it. To all da therapist your welcome for thr extra business.
Why would you take delight in peoples unhappiness. This is not something to celebrate.
I agree. What a messed up comment !
If Canada Post puts forth a proposal, then the employees should be able to vote on the major points. Such as full-time/part-time/weekend delivery. Wage increase, cuts/rollbacks. Allowing Canada Post the option to change where you deliver based on volumes etc.
I think it would speed up negotiations if the postal workers could vote on the main sticking points, rather than just having them vote yes or no to the whole proposal. I believe the postal workers deserve more say and this way Canada Post would know what’s acceptable to workers and what’s not.
The postal workers are getting lost in this, year and a half process. Yet they are the ones being hit the hardest.
Give the Postal Workers a say.
Watching this unfold is like watching a comical game of chicken. Post Office is in a tank, with the power of the government behind them. Union is on the far left of the road, wearing an old (circa 1975) chicken suit.
I think we know who wins this time.
CUPW is the waste of time and money… 100$+ monthly membership and for what… every time they lose more. they dont even let the employees vote, they just confirm 95% voted in favour of strike.. which 95% when people are still getting back on their feet after the December strike and no pay?! as soon as people get back to work, they rush to take their missed due.. 6 months they couldn’t agree, what, they’ll make a miracle in the next 7 days… general public has no sympathy for CP employees anymore and the CUPW doesn’t even share nor ask the workers what the hell do they want and think should be done
Exactly!.So bad for us.The union should allow us to vote.
Fat chance of that…they’ll drag this on til we all lose our jobs…
Well, when the Canada Post threatens to revoke working conditions, suspend benefits and cancel all leave on the 22nd…what did you expect? Canada Post even sent letters to every employee telling them how they were going to be cut off from benefits on the 22nd. Canada Post picked this fight with its workers!
Are you serious right now? No other company pays benefits if there’s a labor disruption…let CUPW pick up the tab…oh wait they’re broke too!
This is the most ridiculous negotiations I’ve ever seen and I’ve got 30 years!
Do you not get it? Canada Post is bankrupt! Period!
The union does not get it and obviously there are some members who also do not get it!
Canada post did not even come close to picking this fight, the union, as outdated as they are has picked the fight.
We, the taxpayers do not want to fund a dying business anymore.
TAX PAYERS DO NOT FUND CANADA POST.
Yes, they do! When Canada post has to borrow 1 billion from the government. The government is the taxpayers. The government does not get that 1 billion from anyone except the taxpayers. This not rocket science. My goodness
It’s a loan
the general business operation are funded by shipping costs. wake up, my goodness. the LOAN was from the govenrment, but the corporation ia not funded by you or your neighbour unless you are paying for CPC products and services. my GOODNESS.
Canada post does not have the money to pay back the loan. They are bankrupt. This means the taxpayers will be paying off this loan. My goodness!
The CP Corporation Act allowed for this loan to be made. It would only be deemed ‘taxpayer’ money if CPC does not pay it back. CPC can refinance with banks and/or generate cash flow to pay this loan back. That loan was all done for publicity as CPC is still a viable business…
@cpc is mean. Obviously you are drinking the cupw koolaid. How can cpc pay back the 1 billion when they do not have the money, in fact as each day goes on they keep getting deeper and deeper in debt. There is nowhere for them to borrow money other than from the taxpayer.
Taxpayers didn’t used to pay for CP. That ship has sailed! That may have been the case last century and beginning of this one. Where do you think the 1 billion ‘loan’ came from?? Apparently you are living in the past along with CUPW.
My goodness, you are so right. Happy to see a few members on here actually understand, sone clearly do not.
Except that they did. Canada Post required a one billion dollar injection from the government (ie. taxpayers) to stay afloat. The reason: they’re losing money every year. The current model is unsustainable. Please wake up.
Yes they did.
100%!!
You’re kidding, right. Canada Post has tried to negotiate with our unreasonable union for years. The union’s demands are ridiculous, we are not in the 1970s. Canada Post has to change in order to survive. Our union just keeps on with their propoganda that Canada Post has unlimited amounts of hidden money that they’re keeping from workers. Canada Post is a crown corporation, their books are public. If our union came up with realistic ideas for increasing revenue, maybe people would take them seriously.
Maybe our union should show their books! Where did all the union dues go?
Good idea, but of course they never will. Can you imagine all the millions of dollars of dues wasted on trips and weekend shop-steward retreats etc? Members pay $1200 per year × 55,000 Members. That equals $66 million dollars per year of our money that CUPW wastes!
Canada Post is not a business! It’s a public service and Canadians deserve to have it run that way. We should be expanding it to provide more services we need like postal banking that the union has been fighting for
Canadians don’t want postal banking. We all have bank accounts already and CP’s banking scheme doesn’t offer anything worth looking at. Canadian taxpayers also don’t want to have to continue paying to keep CP alive and that’s what will have to happen to keep things as they are.. and more-so if you start expanding services. The solutions are obvious to everyone except the union and a handful of employees. Stop wasting time, and driving CP further into the ground, and make the necessary changes.
Postal banking, seriously! Nobody would use postal banking, nobody uses brick and mortar banks anymore. Just like the mail, banking is done online now. Secondly to the banking nonsense is the fact that it would not be dependable as who knows when CUPW will go on strike and then you can not get your money. The whole concept of postal banking is a joke.
Yes a public service that the taxpayers should not be footing the bill to the tune of 1 billion dollars a year . If it was run efficiently without so many trapped hours and entitlement to overtime maybe it one day could be self sufficient again. I worked there for over 25 years, I have seen what goes on.
Yep.
Read Kaplan’s report.
The only thing you can bank on, is that if serious changes aren’t made soon – none of us will have jobs.
That’s an incredibly unrealistic idea and so typical of CUPW. It would cost hundreds of millions to even set up. I’ve never heard of a bank anywhere in the world that closes every couple of years for weeks or months at a time due to strike/ lock-out. What intelligent person would trust their money in a bank like that?
Hear!Hear! I couldn’t agree more!
Theyre stuck in the 80s time capsule
100%
So…. another useless strike that will solve nothing. Tell me cupw. .. what did the last strike 6 months ago solve? Well…. you managed to cost postal workers about $7 grand in lost wages… brilliant… give cpc more fuel to support theyre broke mantra… smart… get a review done supporting cpc and totally ripping you apart… beautiful… and now you want to do it all over again all because your feelings are hurt. And… lmao… you dont want to pay the membership their benefits because you allege it will cost you millions and you cant afford it. Like cpc cant afford to operate under these current conditions. You bunch of hypocrites!!!! Its ok for you to cry poor but not cpc! Definition of insanity. … doing the same thing over and over and over again expecting a different result. Cupw…Youll do NOTHING but cost workers money and be legislated back to work and into arbitrition. Cupw… you are INSANE!!
Anonymous you are so right. All other unions pay the benefits when members are on strike. You need to ask yourself why cupw can not afford to pay the benefits. Just do the math. 55000 X100 per month x12 months is a ton of money. Where did this money go?
Hey dot dot. Still making zero sense! Beauty!
Hope this notice is just procedural. Otherwise you have got to be crazy. You have no cards and you do not have public sentiment.Find an off ramp like letting membership vote on company’s best offer.
We have to have cut back and restructure so save this company. Once things pick up we will have the bargaining power again but for right now we have to cards!!! How is this not understood?????????
Hopefully this results in the demise of CUPW. It is long overdue!
Hear!Hear! I couldn’t agree more!
Theyre stuck in the 80s time capsule
Make a offer and force the union to let the employees vote ASAP
Yes please!
The union must take all employees’ votes, period.
Why is the Union taking our votes?
We should do something.
What can we do now?
100% I’m in when and where
