CUPW negotiations: Discussions continue as conciliation ends, cooling-off period begins

October 15, 2024, 05:17 pm 27 comments

Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) continue to negotiate following the end of the conciliation period. On August 13, the parties had moved into a 60-day conciliation period with the help of neutral conciliators to work towards negotiated agreements for both the Urban and RSMC (Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers) bargaining units.

Canada Post offered to extend the conciliation period to support further discussions; however, the parties could not come to an agreement and the conciliation period expired without extension on October 12.

Cooling-off period

The parties have now entered a 21-day cooling-off period and continue to meet. Only after this cooling-off period would either party be in a position to initiate a labour disruption (following 72-hour advance notice). This timeline means no legal labour disruption can occur before November 3.

Our goal throughout this round of negotiations with CUPW is to reach negotiated agreements, without any labour disruption.

  • Inflation rate is too high give us a reasonable rate increase. Consider a cup of coffee in ten years ago what is the price in your mind? May be it already double it up ? So do we have double hourly rate increased? If not, it means we are under pay.
So, it is fair for us to ask for close to market labor rate.

  • The fact that the company waited a year to put out a ridiculous contract, says a lot. Biggest mistake of the union was the two year extension without the consultation of the workers

    • Agreed. It was the dumbest move ever. Inflation was at 4 and 6% and we were still coming out of COVID and the union agrees to such a shoddy offer? CUPW had leverage back then that does not exist now. It’s almost as if the union execs are in the back pockets of CPC management – that’s how incompetent that deal was.

  • They should give more money to charities like management. The union is terrible,
This stage in the process we back the union and stay together. Canada post management helped people stop using mail. They came up with a solution price it even higher. Look at the vehicles projects, management bonuses.

    • there are electric vehicles sitting at gateway collecting dust, over 180k a piece. I counted 11 been there since last year. great investment 3rd party audit is required.

  • Nobody wins when there is a strike.
The company loses customers and it is hard to get them back and the employees never make back what they lost in wages.

  • guess we are going on strike smh

  • Same old game from the corporation.

  • Well at least they agreed to end this charade of trying to reach a deal.

  • Really. The parties couldnt even agree to continue with conciliation. Now, how difficult could that be? Hey, want to continue with conciliation? Nah… We dont like the food here. Better you ruin the business, and we can have workers on a picket line during the holidays. Anyone up for brunch? Well worry about this some other day.

  • Who cares. We all know the corporation’s game. You’ve been subjecting us to it throughout our entire careers. Show me I’m wrong and reach a real agreement.

    • They wanted to keep working on it but the union didn’t. Interesting. It’s almost like they painted themselves into a corner that you all get to pay the price for. Nobody is bailing you out either, you get to sweat it out. Nobody cares anymore. The world moves on

  • Lessons learnt from past. If CUPW decides to go for strike before x-mas, they will be asked to return to work by Govt. due to Holidays. But if they go for strike immediately after X-mas, it will deliver equally strong message and won’t be asked to return to work.
    Only my opinion BTW.

  • If c u p w can’t extend one week, then they are the problem

  • Need to lock out CUPW, a month without pay and u can finally break this useless union.
Company will lose LESS money with a shutdown!

    • Yes!!!!! I can’t wait.
Keep them out and starve them. Whatever raise they get, it will take them till next contract to make up for their lost salary on streets 😆

      • Who’s going to deliver the mail, management? Will they put their gaiters on and go slug through the snow this Christmas?

        • What mail? Flyers? Almost NO Canadians will notice if we are out for a month or two while Canada Post saves money during this period.
Other companies can deliver the parcels just as well AND FASTER.

          Looking for another job yet?

          Good luck!
