Negotiations paused to reset discussions and focus on resolution

After several days of discussions without meaningful progress, Canada Post has informed the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) that a temporary pause in discussions is necessary. This pause will allow Canada Post to focus on preparing comprehensive proposals aimed at moving discussions forward constructively.

Negotiations resumed at the end of April after breaking off in March. While CUPW requested that both parties return to the table with the assistance of a mediator, the union has either held or hardened its previous positions on key issues, leaving little room for progress.

With collective agreements for CUPW-represented employees extended until May 22, 2025, we understand that our employees and the people we serve are counting on both parties to find a resolution and avoid further labour disruption. Canada Post has therefore advised CUPW that it will use this pause to prepare proposals designed to help advance negotiations and achieve a much-needed resolution. Any offers we bring forward will reflect the Corporation’s current realities.

We recognize the significant challenges facing the Corporation and remain committed to adapting to the evolving needs of Canadians. At the same time, we are focused on protecting and enhancing the wages and benefits that are important to our people. We will continue to share updates on the negotiations process.

  • Burnaby B C to Labrador N L.and all points in between. Celebrate life. I struggle like you financially, but I won’t let CPC and CUPW ruin my summer or my life!!!!!!!!!

  • Bankrupt sure blame it on the workers Canada Post. All us workers paid for all your bonus money Yu received, let’s get a real number on how much was paid out.

  • Bankrupt they should be held responsible for all this mess and not the workers. If it wasn’t for the workers there would be no post office. Good luck.

  • The Champ is back. Waiting to hear from Fan of the Champ. We need CMBS and let’s put out this dumpster fire.

  • Where is Tuna?

    We need more supervisors!

  • Someone read this for me

I will stop sending stupid text and have people who have nothing better to do then read this stupid text.

  • Mexico as 52 state including tsr

I promise not to send any stupid text telling anyone who reads this that I will not send any stupid text.

  • Mexico as the 51st state.

Can anyone explain to me why I’m making comments when there are other more important things to do in life like watching paint dry and grass grow. Have I reached the penicle level of pathecticness. Or is there room for more. Hum?

  • Same tactic every round of contract talks. Endless rollbacks and years of bargaining, mediation, back to work legislation, imposed agreements. Nothing at CP has changed in over 40 years.

  • I’d love to see what the offers have looked like and what the sticking points are. CPC put out an email once last year with their main issues so I’d be interested to see what kind of movement there has been.

  • A got a lot of laughter from all the intelligence being shown by both parties last November. The fact I got front row seats for free again,I can only imagine how much greater the laughter will be this time around.

  • Canada Post needs to do something about all the read tags on monos. Too many red tags!

  • CPC Needs New Management

We should go out on strike until every last person that currently sits in management is fired. They are incompetent. The company’s policies are why we lose money. Cut the fat!!

  • When will this company get a new CEO and executive team? We’re now years into negotiating with no agreement, and a disastrous strike with another looming.

You’ve burned all of your bridges. There is no trust left.

  • I have a feeling employees will be locked out after May 22nd. The Union is doing no favours by digging their heels in. CP needs to change their models to meet current demand and try to be competitive again. There has to be some negotiation room on both sides for a good resolution to happen. I do not know enough of what CP is wanting to remove from the current pay scale. My understanding was that they were not really looking to change benefits and such for current employees but for any future new hires. The Union doesn’t have much going for them right now, there is no incentive to resolve the dispute quickly. Striking at Christmas did not get them the deal they wanted, they won’t get it now. The communities do not want a strike; I do not want a strike as my spouse works for CP.

  • Public should know that numerous employees are collecting canada post pension plus canada post salary as they won’t leave & canada cpp etc so many are paid 3 times by CP. Most are over 70 and accommodated so not able to do must jobs. Cupw demands full timers get OTbefore part timers who gave not even worked 40 hrs work which cost CP even more. Cupw does absolutely nothing but collect dues & most know this union is a joke

  • Bankruptcy!!! Canada post owns Purolator!

  • disgruntled union member

Once again CUPW has let us down, over 25 years of “the struggle continues” but 25 plus years of not being successful in any contract demands!! Just let us work, this is why we are here!

  • For those who are sleeping under a rock. This new gov is going to ruin canada and destroy everything in its path, including canada post. It’s over for Canada post start polishing your resumes.

  • Jobs are jobs. Employees just want to work and pay their bills. Corporation should have resolved all these issues years back when it wasn’t so hard to do so.

  • Enhancing benefits? I’ve had the same vision and dental limits for 25 years. Just what is being ‘enhanced’?

  • If Canada Post claims bankruptcy it will help bust the union and send business to the private sector where the workers can get new jobs at a lower wage. Good on Cupw for destroying the future for the workers.

  • “Any offers we bring forward will reflect the Corporation’s current realities”

Hopefully they bring an offer forward that reflect projected realities….. Like all the changes they have planned and the numbers that go with them.

  • Is there a reason this site restricts comments & shows only which ones the want the public to see ?

  • The union needs to take a good hard look at themselves…
We are no longer holding any sort of monopoly or any sort of bargaining power..
Yeah, I agree that the very
remote communities still need service.. But tell me now, how many of you actually get mailed to your home?
I bet most of you have everything emailed..
    We hardly have any customers.
The union years ago should have dictated the rollout of SSD
And dynamic routing and working in eight hour day. And educating all of us that “ perhaps we need to realize we are no longer a monopoly “ and things need to change “
Instead We focus on the past…
Nobody likes change.. I get it…
But really we have no work…
To salvage what is there the union needs to get with the times!
And stop rah rah- ing ppl…
They get people all worked up and behind this entitlement…
    It’s ludicrous
We have no mail / parcels people
What we do have people don’t deliver or don’t want to deliver or have an accommodation or get pissed off that they have a flyer.. let me remind you that flyer is money.
    Same with group 1 employees,
we have 30 people that stand around doing nothing but yet we want to a raise & overtime!?!
I Think we need to be realistic
I also think the union needs to revamp themselves our dues . They are so ridiculous.
Just because things are in the constitution whether it be local , regional or national
The money that is spent that is our union dollars.. spending should be revamped as well!
a whole revamp of our union needs to happen!
It costs lots to fight the employer and yes $ is needed . But all the things we do spend $ on is crazy and the spending should be relooked at !
Money should be spent on the union members.. not just the executives and on things that were once relative. A good “ retool” should happen and lots taken out of the constitution..
Lean out the spending and save the $ for strike/ lock out at a living wage amount or fighting the employer against CA violations

And all these new & 10 to 15 year employees.. need to open their eyes to reality!
But what can I say? The Union feeds you what you wanna hear so…

I hope the hell we get a deal!

I’m not saying the corporation is not to blame hugely!
But the union needs to take its responsibility for not opening its eyes and being proactive years ago!
Instead we just cater to saying “what we need to say” . Different things to different groups to satisfy what ever audience is listening ..

    Open your eyes CUPW
    PLEASE

  • Sound like CPC is acting in accordance with their agenda. Claiming “Poor” and placing that on the workers shoulders. Canada Post has done nothing to keep this service for Canadians. The CEO should be fired and Canada Post should loose their treasury status . Shame on you Canada Post

  • Seriously, both sides need to actually negotiate and get a deal done NOW. Sounds like all they are doing is buckling down and then accusing the other party of not being willing to budge. It takes 2 willing parties to negotiate in good faith. Employees don’t want and can’t afford another strike or lockout. Customers need stability not constant fear of a strike or a lockout. Do better CUPW and Canada post corporation.

  • The union needs to open their eyes and not keep pretending they are working for us… There is no damn mail we’ve been losing customers left right and centre…
I like how they twisted to whomever they’re talking to whichever audience whichever group…
Nobody likes change. No one wants to evolve, but everybody working here can see that we are becoming obsolete.
So those of you that think we have some sort of monopoly or bargaining power are delusional
Years ago, we should have had the union dictate how the rollout of SSD would be or dynamic routing or working an eight hour day..
But no, we chose to, rah rah The troops that we were untouchable..
Now don’t get me wrong. I wish things hadn’t changed, but the world has changed.
And and many many things need to change like the spending that happens also with our union dollars…
So moving forward, I hope a deal is made.. but I hope the union revamp themselves as well. Our union dollars do not need to be so exorbitant. We should roll back the things that we do and so on the workers and not so many other things that we deal with I think we should eliminate a lot of the expenditures that Union the constitution where that be local or national .. Food for thought..

  • Very concerned at the way this is going. I refuse to sacrifice more of my paycheque for nothing burgers! If we vote again for a yes or no to a stike, no way I’ll vote Yes for another strike!

  • This is beyond ridiculous. The union update basically says the opposite, that the corporation isn’t willing to budge. So neither side is willing to or able to actually negotiate? They have had more than enough time and are clearly incapable of doing the job. Stop playing with people’s livelihoods and futures, no employees wants or can afford another strike or lockout. Put together a best offer to employees and let them vote on it.

  • Why doesn’t Canada Post claim bankruptcy already?

    • I agree 💯%

    • Canada Post owns Purolator
      They have lots of money.

    • It is a service pal. Bankruptcy not an options. Plus the balance sheet is stable, and if management focuses on making money the business is viable.

    • Cupw is useless & has capitulated an agreement every-time over past 10 years. They don’t want a strike as they have no power & have spent millions sitting in hotels eating & drinking for 2 years getting nothing done. An absolute disgrace. They have no new ideas. Forget every day delivery, no one needs it for flyers. Bills come once a month ! Cupw only cares about union dues & ft employees . They allow FT employees OT when PT have not gotten 40 hrs & Costs CP thousands & is not sustainable. Plus Loads of FT retirees continue working (of course on accommodation as the can’t meet job requirements) who get CP retirement, CP paycheque & CPP benefits and work all OT?! Insanity CUPW will not Recommend CP gives part timers 3 days at 8 hours rather than 4 days with 4 hr shifts which is ridiculous !
The entire CP needs investigation & CYPW should be decertified. .

  • This is ridiculous. The union needs to take a good hard look at the lack of business coming into the workplace. We have already lost so many customers and this will for sure drive the final nail into the coffin. CUPW should be focusing on the jobs of today and insure that we have a Canada Post tomorrow. No one can afford to go on strike or be locked out! This is shameful from both parties. GET A DEAL DONE NOW BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!!!!

    • Dont you understand that the current postal model is unsustainable? It doesn’t work. There are going to be huge changes coming and it wont be good for either side.

  • Canada Post needs to take their rollbacks to our pension off the table, it’s a red line for the workers.

  • It’s greedy above any other thing. Both sides don’t care about future of Canada Post n hapless employees held as hostage in this war of games. Last 2 yrs negotiations,
no agreement . It will have to be imposed by Govt.

    • Only one side is trying to expand services to make Canada post profitable and it isn’t management

  • All they have done is write down what they have previously agreed too. Now we have to wait for the industrial inquiry recommendations.
sounds to me like CP is preparing a global offer.
If they really wanted to be prudent they would have closed gateway long ago.

    • That’s what they need to do now that AJPC is being so under-utilized right now.

  • “the union has either held or hardened its previous positions on key issues, leaving little room for progress”

What about the corporation? Have you made any effort to adjust YOUR positions? If so, please inform us. Negotiation is a two way street. But the Corporation seems to think only one side should make concessions.

  • Every reasonably intelligent CUPW member is hoping for arbitration now. The two sides coming to a negotiated agreement seems impossible. The union can’t win on their weekend delivery fight. Every full-time LC lost approx $7000 in part-one of our never-ending strike, all for nothing. We can’t afford to lose any more.

    • Cupw has never been able to negotiate one thing in past 12 years& are totally ineffective at bargaining table & with employee issues. A total waste of $ but you are forced to join. Anyone can get great legal service with $95 plus/month dues.cupw communicates nothing to members yet sit in hotels for years eating & drinking & coming out with not one resolution. How can members be so blind

    • No they didnt. And theyll lose more by caving in.

  • Canada Post won’t bargain in good faith because they know the government will just order us back to work when they don’t budge on their pathetic offer. We are only asking for our wages to be brought back to 2008 levels. Stop trying to privatize Canada Post! Of course we aren’t profitable, no public service that provides essential services to Arnprior, Labrador and the territories can be!

  • This is will be the end of Canada Post.

  • I have lost trust in CUPW, as we have gained nothing in the last three rounds of bargaining. I am deeply concerned that our careers may be coming to an end due to the lack of resolution on outstanding issues. It’s time to send this to arbitration.

    • Arbitration won’t help, CUPW has their hands tied because Canada Post won’t bargain because they know they don’t have to, eventually the government will order us back to work when Canada Post doesn’t budge off of their pathetic offer

    • Very concerned at the way this is going. I refuse to sacrifice more of my paycheque for nothing burgers! If we vote again for a yes or no to a stike, no way I’ll vote Yes for another strike!

      • Then youre the definition of a sheep and the union will never have leverage again.

      • CUPW wouldn’t dare to hold another vote. They know members would overwhelmingy vote ‘No’. They’ll just continue on with Part-Two of their failed strike and again achieve nothing. Except allowing all dues-paying members to lose thousands of dollars again.

    • But Canada Post refuses to go to arbitration

    • This company has never bargained in good faith. They spend $4 billion in a new plant, new vehicles, and bonuses fir management then claim they are broke, all the while turning away business and refusing to expand services.

It’s time to fire the board, sell off Purolator, which is being used to break CUPW by shifting business away from Canada post, and return Canada post to a ministry, not a crown corporation, getting back to serving Canadians and away from chasing profit.

  • Is this a good or bad sign?

  • Andre melanson

Company needs to stop tryong to force rollbacks.
