Update on CUPW Negotiations

On Wednesday, June 4, Minister of Jobs and Families Patty Hajdu asked Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) to “return to the bargaining table with federal mediators to do two things: to seek to negotiate terms for an arbitration process…and to have the union table its response to Canada Post’s last global offers.”

Canada Post entered the discussions last week to try and break through the longstanding impasse. The parties did exchange some information on Thursday and Friday through the mediators, but there wasn’t enough to make any progress.

First, the Union has not tabled a response to our final global offers providing no basis to resolve or resume bargaining. Canada Post presented its offers to CUPW on May 28. There was also no indication that a response would be coming.

Second, we believe the final report of the Industrial Inquiry Commission (IIC) clearly outlines the critical issues we face and the immediate actions that need to be taken. It should therefore be the foundational document that guides any discussions about Canada Post’s path forward. The Union’s refusal to recognize the IIC report and its recommendations in their proposed terms of reference for arbitration is unacceptable.

After 18 months, we urgently need a fair resolution that begins to address our challenges while respecting the important role our employees play, and the voice they have in our future.

  • Unions are great until they become the business

  • What’s next. Job security? Why not take that too ? Sounds about right, really everyone work part time. What happened to a good wage full time job for Canadians. Just get some work done on this contact. Before tts sold off. Then no one will have a job. No one outside inside Desk sitters too Go to arbitration is an absolute disaster that’s CUPW ‘s fault their asks were crazy ( especially banking ). Wellness checks. Good lord…. Many others but these two were hilarious

    • Turning post offices into internet cafe’s… lol, those haven’t been around since affordable computers and smart phones came on the market. CUPW’s talking points for alternate ways to save the business are mostly fruitless and blind to the harsh reality.

    • I literally thought I was transported to an alternate reality when I read the “plan” to make money was to become banks, perform wellness checks, and become community gathering hubs/internet cafes. Who comes up with these ideas?

  • Voting is the only way to resolve this! Let’s vote as soon as possible before this company collapses.
There will be no jobs for us unless the company recovers.

  • Load leveling with rsmcs is a non starter, negotiate arbitration terms like the minister told u too.

  • You could try negotiating instead of crying
